Flight of fancy: Air gratitude
Strange feeling about air travel? Get a grip.
Not for the arm of your passenger seat – in fact, history and the incredible success of human spaceflight.
We have just celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Wright brothers historic flight 'at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Werecertainly Although others have experimented with flying machines – especially Alberto Santos-Dumont, a Brazilian celebrated in his homeland, so thatfather of aviation – the Wright brothers are generally regarded as the first people in the world to win.
The fascinating thing about the Wright brothers is that they are idealistic dreamers who do not expect to be. They were serious, eager and crucial thing to learn. Not that she is haunted by the dream of climbing high above the earth. Were subjected to mechanical brothers who owned a bicycle shop and could not forget the brief but excitingflight of a cheap toy airplane they want to receive from children. I am fascinated by the technical challenge.
Let's face – were geeks. A good thing. Like geeks everywhere, they dug, immerse themselves in their research. Following the ridge and test the heck out of it, the key component that allowed this is the first thing that piece of wood, cloth and wire could be a man and – key point – landing without crashing into question.
The Wrightbrothers have the same access to records of tried and failed attempts at flight as all other Aviateurs any time. They studied birds, they analyzed physics properties, and wind tunnels – just like everyone else. Sure, it was their persistent insistence that led to its success, but something that really helped them nail no. They have a piece of the puzzle, and worked to decipher without mercy.
Instead of focusing on the force required for assemblyinvention, or engine power, focused on the concept of control. No sentence was a great flight only to crash into the trees, after some moments of joy. This was the question of control that captured their imagination and led to a project with mobility and security.
But as concentrated as were the movements to the right of flying machines are not aware of continual experimentation and refinement of their ideas. The deducedtheir efforts to sales management and research and development division was left flapping in the wind. While Wright was involved in patent struggles and contracts, adventurers from around the world improve their original design and construction of aircraft aimed at business travelers, airports and flight schools. In 1912, Wilbur and Orville died lost interest in flying.
Meanwhile, Santos-Dumont continued his passion for air. He is also credited with earlythe first public flight as well as designing the first air-fluid. He zipped in Europe, after the fashionable restaurants and parking his plane out front, right by the horses tied. When the Wrights were methodical and diligent, Santos-Dumont was a man in a city known for its flashy and bold sense of style. He cut a great figure and an inspiration for everyone from designers to engineers. His friend, Louis Cartier, the first wristwatch for him after Santos-Dumontneed to keep track of time employed, while flying his plane.
Santos-Dumont could not give a rip about patents. Instead of spending your time and money to protect its designs, he freely offered his ideas to anyone interested in copying and improving them. And 'involved shareware idea: take this, go and prosper. We saw this approach in software (Linux) and hybrid-electric cars (Hunter and Amory Lovins), and although rarely leads to great wealth for the creators, isgreatly facilitates the access and abilities.
After years of flying high, little Santos-Dumont from ill health and committed suicide in 1932. I do not think that talent is not courage, technique individualism guarantees a happy ending. The Wrights ran out of passion, and Santos-Dumont lost his mojo. In their way, they just burn out.
It 's interesting to think about how we need both Wright's brave resistance and free-thinking generosity of Santos-DumontEvery project we do. The greatest invention of the world will never capture the excitement of the population without those who fear their efforts to use them. Who creates the buzz is certainly standing on the shoulders of those who quietly developed the technology, but we must bring the zeal of the early adopters and the cultural change is the general acceptance of a new idea.
Bill Gates, that extraordinary and geekssaid: "The Wright brothers were the greatest cultural force since the invention of writing, the plane, the first World Wide Web, people with different languages, ideas and values .."
The next time you're slogging through security, struggling to put the bag in the overhead compartment, or grumble about legroom, breaking a moment to reflect on the scope of human flight. Admit to the wonderful thing it is and celebratewho lived and died for its creation. Appreciate the necessary risk-taking in the last century until it reaches the window.
Keep remain seated until the plane was still full, and whispers words of gratitude to the Wright brothers for their quick to discover what it takes to make it a safe landing.
You can now freely around the cabin. Do not complain.
Thank you for what we have, Wilbur and Orville.
